NDRI Director's Report March 2007

Dale Kimball, Director

It is our pleasure to furnish you with the quarterly report regarding the progress of Northshore Disaster Recovery, Inc. (NDRI) / Slidell Storm Center whose purpose is to respond to those who were uninsured or underinsured and whose unmet needs will not be covered by other relief systems private or public. We provide spiritual, emotional and physical resources to those affected by Hurricane Katrina, including the rebuilding of hurricane damaged homes in St. Tammany and Washington Parishes of Louisiana.

NDRI was established in Oct 2005 as the Long Term Recovery Organization for St. Tammany. We are located on the campus of Aldersgate UMC at 360 Robert Blvd. During the months of Oct 05 thru Dec 05 the center was involved in relief efforts ranging from food, water and clothing distribution to tree cutting and house gutting. In January 2006 the center and its staff switched gears to begin the long term recovery process by entering into the reconstruction phase. In May of 2006 we opened a satellite center in Bogalusa, Louisiana to support the recovery efforts in Washington Parish. To date NDRI has rebuilt 268 severely damaged homes, repaired 195 moderately damaged homes, and completed 5870 other Unmet Needs cases ranging from medical assistance to transportation. These numbers do not include the hundreds of homes that were gutted and cleaned out in the months immediately after Hurricane Katrina. To date we have served 4,748 clients and have 286 open cases. We currently have 61 homes in work in various stages of reconstruction and repair. We have 84 cases pending reconstruction.

FEMA Trailer extension

How to apply for a FEMA Trailer Permit Extension

Following Hurricane Katrina, Parish Government issued travel trailer permits for residents who needed temporary lodging while repairing their homes. Those permits were originally scheduled to expire in November, but Parish President Kevin Davis issued a blanket extension on all travel trailer permits until March 1, 2007, which is 18 months after Katrina’s landfall.

While more than 4,000 trailers have been “deactivated” by FEMA, nearly 7,000 remain. It has always been the intention of Parish Government to allow these trailers to remain while residents conducted permitted repairs to their homes or found permanent housing, and Parish Government will work with FEMA to help residents keep their trailers when there is legitimate need.

Through individual applications, permits may be extended beyond March 1. Parish Government is asking for information about your situation that will help us find you the assistance you need. Some residents are awaiting money from the Road Home program, or have been denied SBA loans. Some may still be in negotiation (or litigation) with insurance companies. Some may simply have been unable to find a licensed contractor. Whatever your circumstances, WE WILL HELP YOU FIND SOLUTIONS.

If you will need your trailer beyond March 1, you need only make application to the Disaster Recovery Committee in writing by Feb. 28, 2007. To apply for an extension, download the form.
